Community/Lebanon Impact

Wadad Halwani is the wife of a missing person, and the founder of the "Committee for the Families of the Kidnapped and Disappeared in Lebanon" (established in 1982), and its president to this day.
After 36 years of struggle and several national campaigns, Mrs. Halwani, alongside the Committee, local allies, and international partners, succeeded in obtaining the landmark Law No. 105 on the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared on November 30, 2018. This historic law recognizes the rights of families to know the fate of their loved ones.
Following the adoption of the law, Mrs. Halwani was appointed to the National Commission for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons as the representative of the families. She remains fully committed to activating the commission’s work and uncovering the fate of all those who remain unaccounted for.
Beyond her national role, Mrs. Halwani is a member of the International Network of Victims and Survivors of Serious Human Rights Violations (INOVAS) and a member of the General Assembly of the Lebanese Association for Democratic Election Monitoring (LADE).
