Through her work and teaching, Dr. Carmen Hassoun Abou Jaoudé advocates for justice, peace, and human rights. She firmly believes that addressing Lebanon's legacy of violence and abuses is essential to achieving a just peace and genuine reconciliation in the country. She considers resolving the issue of missing and forcibly disappeared persons as a crucial step in this process. Dr. Abou Jaoudé strives to raise awareness of these causes through transformative education, research, and storytelling.

Dr. Carmen Hassoun Abou Jaoudé holds a BA in journalism from the Lebanese University and an MA and PhD in political science from the University of Montpellier in France. Her PhD dissertation is on the establishment of the Ministry of foreign affairs in post-independence Lebanon.
Work history
Previous Professions:
Dr. Carmen Hassoun Abou Jaoudé worked as a journalist, contributing to L’Orient-Express and Al-Mulhaq, the cultural supplement of An-Nahar newspaper, before transitioning to research and academic teaching. She has taught at the Lebanese University, the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, the Academic University College for Non-Violence and Human Rights (AUNOHR), and the American University of Beirut.
Between 2011 and 2015, she worked with the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), first as Head of Program and later as Head of its Lebanon office. At ICTJ, she managed a multi-year project titled “Lebanon: Addressing the Legacy of Conflict in a Divided Society” and oversaw its reports and policy recommendations, which were issued in 2014 by a consortium of Lebanese civil society actors under the title Confronting the Legacy of Political Violence in Lebanon: An Agenda for Change.
She is the creator of a free MOOC course, launched in 2022 by Université La Sagesse with the support of OHCHR, titled Dealing with the Past: The Missing and Forcibly Disappeared in Lebanon (in Arabic with English subtitles). In July 2020, she was appointed as a member of the National Commission for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared in Lebanon (Law 105/2018).
