Community Involvement

In 1999, when the Lebanese Autism Society (LAS) was established, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) was still largely unknown in Lebanon, even among specialists in the fields of psychology and education. Early diagnosis was practically nonexistent, and there were no early intervention programs or support services for individuals with autism and their families. At that time, Lebanese society largely rejected individuals with autism, which led to their social isolation. Many people either ignored the issue or dealt with it harshly and without sensitivity toward the individuals affected and their families. This lack of social acceptance forced many parents to keep their children at home and avoid public places. After 20 years of dedicated work by the Lebanese Autism Society, Arwa Al‑Amin Halawi believes that the Society’s greatest achievement has been raising awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder and paving the way toward broader social acceptance. This progress has significantly contributed to strengthening early diagnosis and intervention for individuals on the spectrum.
