Community Involvement
Joumana Merhy is a prominent Lebanese human rights and feminist activist, engaged in the defense of human rights and women's rights since 1985. In 2018, she was selected among the 100 most influential human rights figures in the world, and among the top 20 Arab personalities. She was honored in 2020 by the Cultural Movement – Antelias on the occasion of International Women’s Day and the Centennial of the Lebanese Republic, in recognition of her longstanding activism. Since 2004, Merhi has served as the Director of the Beirut Office of the Arab Institute for Human Rights, and since 2000, she has been active as a regional trainer across the Arab world in the fields of human rights, human rights-based approaches to development, and gender equality. Her work focuses on issues such as women’s rights, combating gender-based violence and discrimination, and integrating gender perspectives into development and human rights. She also has extensive experience in training of trainers and strategic planning based on human rights frameworks. Among the key positions she has held: • President of the Lebanese Democratic Women's Gathering (December 2009 – January 2013) • Coordinator of the Arab Women’s Forum – Aisha Network (2008 – 2011) • Coordinator of the Democratic Forum for Women in Transitional Societies in Lebanon – Amneh Forum (since 2014) • President of the Center for the Promotion of Employment and Social Protection – RCEP (since 2019)
